The History of the adidas Shoe, from its Early Beginnings to Today

The adidas story is one of innovative designs, epic moments and the creation of the versatile sports shoe, worn by the likes of Lionel Messi, Run DMC and Madonna. A sneaker enthusiast's paradise, this book tells the story of adidas through nearly 200 shoe styles from the "adidas Archive," including one-of-a-kind originals, vintage styles, and designs from Stella McCartney, Yohji Yamamoto, Parley for the Oceans, and more.

One hundred years ago the brothers Adolf ("Adi") and Rudolf Dassler made their first pair of sports shoes. Hundreds of innovative designs, epic moments and star collaborations later, this book offers a visual overview of the adidas shoe across nearly 200 models.

To further improve and tailor his products to athletes' specific needs, Dassler asked them to return used footwear when they no longer needed it, with all the shoes ending up in his attic (even today, many athletes return their shoes to adidas , often as a thank you after winning a title or setting a world record). This collection now constitutes the "adidas archive," one of the largest, if not the largest archive of any sporting goods manufacturer in the world—which photographers Christian Habermeier and Sebastian Jäger have been visually documenting in extreme detail for years.

Shot using the best reproduction techniques, these images reveal the finest details as well as stains, tears, repair tape, grass stains, faded autographs. It's all here, unmanipulated and captured in ultra-high resolution—and with that, each user's personal stories come to light. We find the shoes worn by the German national football team during the "miraculous" victory in the 1954 World Cup and those worn by Kathrine Switzer when she ran the Boston Marathon in 1967, before women were officially allowed to compete; customized models for stars from Madonna to Lionel Messi; collaborations with personalities such as Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Raf Simons, Stella McCartney, Parley for the Oceans or Yohji Yamamoto; as well as the brand's pioneering techniques and materials, such as the innovative use of plastic waste intercepted from beaches and coastal communities.

Accompanied by expert text, each image tells us the why and how, but also conveys the driving force of adidas. What we discover goes beyond simple design; in the end, these are just shoes, worn by their users who loved them—but they are also direct witnesses of our sporting, design and cultural history, from the beginnings of the Dassler brothers to the founding of adidas to today.
